How I lost my baby weight

Brooklyn is 9 months old and to be completely honest, I thought I would be back to my pre-pregnancy weight way sooner than I was. It took me about 7 months to get there…those last 5 lbs were a killer!

Brooklyn was born 2 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs 6oz. I gained 31 lbs over the course of the 38 weeks I was pregnant.

When Brooklyn was born, my priorities changed. I used to workout 5-6 days a week. I could go before work or after work, whatever worked with my schedule that day. These days I am lucky if I can make it to the gym 3-4 times a week…and if I’m being completely honest, 2-3 days a week is the new normal.

I went to Shred415 throughout my entire pregnancy which kept me healthy, sane and feeling good! I was able to keep up with shred up until 35 weeks and then I had to stop. I was so uncomfortable and even walking made my hips ache! I returned back to shred about 4 weeks postpartum with light walking and after I got the clear at my 6 week checkup, started to really get back into it.

Post-pregnancy, I found myself not nearly as toned as before and I was looking to add in another type of workout on top of Shred to really help tone me up quickly. I discovered the pilates megaformer and have been OBSESSED ever since!! I have found that my body responds very well to the combination of these two workouts.

My favorite megaformer workout studios are BodyR&D, Studio Lagree and CHI50. I will never forget the first megaformer class I took…my muscles were shaking so much, I was sweating so hard and I was cursing to myself over and over praying for class to end. I had NO idea how I would ever be able to make it through an entire class. It took me about 3-4 weeks of consistently going to class to really catch on and get the hang of things. Class is still very difficult but I finally feel like I can keep up…most of the time!

Since I can’t make it to the gym as much as I used to, I’ve tried to focus on cleaning up my diet…A LOT. If you follow my blog, I recently wrote about my Whole30 experience. I am so glad I completed a Whole30. It was a nice re-start and just what my body needed to get back on track. I now try to eat clean 80% of the time and make smarter choices when it comes to the food I am fueling my body with.

The next thing I focused on was my water consumption.  I aim to drink drink 3-4 liters of water a day! This helps keep me hydrated, gives me energy, helps my skin and also helps me to not snack mindlessly.

I have also been trying to think of ways to celebrate personal accomplishments outside of food & wine. I feel like I would always reach for a glass of champagne or plan a fancy meal out when I wanted to celebrate something exciting going on in my life. For example when I lost 20 of my 31 lbs, I treated myself to new workout clothes to wear to my classes instead of an ice cream cone from Jeni’s (we live a few blocks away…its dangerous)

So to recap:

  1. Try to get in at least 3 workouts a week. If you can’t make it to a gym, there are so many at home programs you can do and work it around your schedule!
  2. Be mindful about your eating. I try to stick to a 80/20 rule, that way I never feel deprived but I know if a special occasion comes up and I want to indulge, I won’t feel guilty because I am eating healthy the majority of the time
  3. Water consumption – try to drink 3-4 liters of water a day! This will help keep bloat down, flush away toxins, will help keep you full longer and will also help your skin look its best
  4. Find other ways to award yourself outside of food! I’m sharing my favorite workout clothes below, which I treated myself too when I lost a majority of my weight

Dieting, eating mindfully, clean eating, working out…none of it is easy. Try to find a support buddy who can hold you accountable. It also makes it more fun when you get to workout with a friend.  I am by no means an expert but these are the steps I took that worked for me.
